8 Days Yushu Horse Racing Festival Tour

Daily Itinerary

Day 1 9th July
Beijing arrival/Xining

Arrival in Xining, capital of Qinghai Province. Also known to be a major stopping point on the ancient Silk Road. Therefore, Xining becomes a historically significant city worthy of some reflection. Upon arrival, your private tour guide and driver will pick you up from the airport to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of day at your leisure.

Day 2 20th July
Xining/Huzhu/Ganchankou/Menyuan/Datong/Xining (B/L/D)
After breakfast in hotel. Your journey Starts from Xining to Menyuan, the land of rape flowers. Driving from Huzhu to Menyuan via Ganchankou township, enjoy the driving on the 12 twisting mountain road which is called “Shierpan”. Upon arrival in Menyuan County where golden rape flowers are flourishing most in July. You could have a view about 400 million square meters of rape flowers blossom. The Menyuan rape flower fields are famous for their bright yellow rape flower fields that come into bloom in late spring. In that time, the annual Rape Flower Festival will be held in Menyuan. Then driving back to Xining.

Day 3 21th July
Xining/kumbum monastery/Qinghai lake/Gonghe (B/L/D)
After breakfast in hotel. The journey today starts from Tongren, today we are heading to Kumbum Monastery, one of the 6 largest Gelukpa monasteries in Tibet. Then continue driving west to visit one of the most beautiful Lake of China----Qinghai Lake, Qinghai Lake's most scenic spots. Heading to the south shores of the lake, you will pass by Sun and Moon Mountain. Then we will stop for the great panoramic view obtained from another lakeside mountaintop, and finally having a view of the sightseeing at the lakeside Er Langjian Scenic Area, you can choose a short boat ride as your optional. Returning to the parking lot and continue driving to Gonghe via rolling grass mountains, you will have the chance to visit local Tibetan families along the way. Upon arrival, check in the hotel, local tasty boiled mutton and noodles is the main food for dinner there.

Day 4 22th July
Gonghe/Maduo/Yushu (B/L/D)

After breakfast, it is going to be a hard day with a long distance driving over the mountains and cross the rivers. You will pass 7 mountains with the elevation more than 4200 meters to reach Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture. Gobi desert would be something must-seen along the road to Maduo. Upon arrival Maduo, the river forward is yellow river, the mother river of China, having a quick lunch and pass the first bridge of yellow river to head to Yushu directly, enjoy the scenery along the road and breath the fresh air. Upon arrival in Yushu ,check into the hotel and have dinner.

Day 5 23th July
Yushu/GyanaManistonepile/Lepavaeely/PrincessWencheng temple/Yushu (B/L/D)

After breakfast, today is a relax day for you, driving back a little bit towards Maduo, 12 kilometers north to Yushu is the location of Gyana Mani stone pile, this is the world’s largest Mani stone pile of which has won the world Guinness records, made up of 30 hundred million different sized stones carved with Tibetan letters and Buddhist figures and symbols. Then keep moving to the north and drive across the bridge to Lepa valley, where Buddhist Sutras and teaching are carved on the big and small rocks in the river. Drive over the mountain and reach to Princess Wencheng temple, a small temple with stone carved Buddha images was told that Princess Wencheng had a long stay when she passed Yushu to Lhasa to meet Tibetan king. After that, driving back to Yushu and having enough rest to make your body to be adjusted automatically to adapt to the high mountain.

Day 6 24th July
Yushu/Horse racing site (B/L/D)

After breakfast in hotel. Enjoy the morning at your leisure and do enough preparation for the festival, after lunch, drive to Dangdai mountain which lies in the center of the city where you will view the whole new Yushu after 2010’s big earthquake, continue driving to the place where horse racing is holding. There you may spend the whole afternoon to find the best point to take photos of the festival in next day. And watching how people are getting ready for the festival is very interesting thing. Drive back to Yushu and enjoy your hot pot dinner with local fresh yak meet and local beer.

Day 7 25th July
Yushu/horse racing ground/Yushu (B/L/D)

Get up early and have quick breakfast, then drive towards horse racing site and stand by at your ideal place. We will spend whole day to experience this grand ceremony of Tibetan plateau. Tourists can play and dance with Tibetans, and watch the extraordinary horsemanship in horse riding competition and archery skills, feel the power of Tibetan wrestling. Engulfed in pervasive carnival atmosphere, you will be invited in Tibetan nomads’ camps and enjoy tasty Tibetan food or explore the trade fair on the prairie. Lunch today would be packed food and will be delivered to each before we started from hotel in case that we get separated in the mess ground. The meeting place and timing in the afternoon would be told by your guide so that you don’t need to worry you get lost. Enjoy the festival and meet with your guide at rendezvous at appointed time, drive back to hotel and have last dinner in Yushu.

Day 8 26th July
Yushu (B)

Wake up naturally and check out the hotel according to your flight time, the check out time from hotel must be 2.5 hours before the departure time of your flight.The guide and drive will send you to Yushu airport and help you to Check in.Take the flight to next destination, the tour ends.
