Home > Frequently questions on the avian influenza A (H7N9) virus

Avian influenza viruses normally circulate among birds. Avian influenza H7N9 is a subtype of influenza viruses that have been detected in birds in the past. This particular H7N9 virus had not previously been seen in either animals or people until it was found in April 2013. This virus does not appear to transmit easily from person to person, and sustained human-to-human transmission has not been reported.

Animals carrying the virus

Avian influenza H7N9, is a kind of seasonal virus occasionally occurred in spring, March, April or May, when birds migrate from south to north. Based on the announcement issued by W.H.O., most of the cases of human infection with this avian H7N9 virus have reported recent exposure to live poultry or potentially contaminated environments, especially markets where live birds have been sold.

China has a great population base. The patients suffering from H7N9 virus is countable with amount of two hundreds in 2013. It shows obviously the prevalence rate of avian influenza H7N9 is extremely low. Compare with the other epidemic diseases, Flu causes more serious damage rather than the H7N9 virus. Flu tends to strike everyone, no matter the strong or the infant, the elder and the weak during the winter months. The prevalence rate of flu is much higher than that of the H7N9 virus.

We pay much attention on the prevention of Avian influenza viruses. During the spring season, we do not arrange any visits to the area or the market of live birds and poultry. Tourists can not reach the source of infection.

W.H.O. has never recommend travel restrictions related to H7N9 and definitely indicates travel in China is safe, as there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus. So far as we pay more attention on our personal hygiene, do not worry too much about Avian influenza H7N9.

W.H.O

Avian influenza H7N9 is hardly appeared in summer according to the records of W.H.O. because the virus is very difficult to survive in hot climates. If you are going to start your journey from June, there will be no virus disturbances.
